"Rhythms and Beats: My journey for joining the Drum and Lyre Corps"

I took the chance and joined the drum corps, a decision that opened the door to a whole new world of experiences and joy. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a deep love for music, so when the opportunity to join a drum and lyre corps came up, I didn’t think twice. I wanted to experience what it’s like to be part of a competition, something we didn’t have when I was in elementary school.

Coming back to the drum life

Back in elementary school, I was already involved in a band, and I played the snare drum, it was my first taste of being part of a music group. There was something exciting about playing and tuning instruments yet I stopped joining DLC because of financial problems but I tried joining this year. so when I got the chance to join a drum and lyre corps again, I jumped at the opportunity.

However, I didn’t expect the training to be as tough as it was. I thought it would be easy, just hitting the drum and keeping the beat. But no, it turned out there was so much more to it. There’s a lot of focus on timing, discipline, and coordination. Plus, this time I’m playing a different instrument, the Bass Drum which requires precision, good hearing and timing.

team, there are bound to be arguments and misunderstandings. It's inevitable, especially when you work this closely with people. What I have learned, though, is that these challenges are part of the process. In the end, we will always find a way to sort out the issue and get together. It's all about respecting one another and learning how to compromise for the greater good of the team.

But the best of all is during break time. As if the real fun starts there. So much laughter, jokes, bonding with the team. I learned that it is not just about the music but about the friends that you make and memories that you share with them. And those are the reasons why it's a lot of fun to be part of a team like this.

A core memory of drum corps

All in all, my experiences in the drum corps have been filled with joy and valuable lessons. It’s not just about playing an instrument or competing; it’s about working together, showing care for one another, and enjoying the colorful moments of camaraderie along the way. Every challenge and hardship we face as a group is always outweighed by the victories and the sense of accomplishment we share.

Life in a drum corps isn’t just about rehearsals and performances. It’s a journey of people coming together to create beautiful music and lasting bonds, and along the way, making unforgettable memories. With every beat and every step, I’ve realized that music is a language that’s not only heard but also felt.

To achieve the title "CHAMPION"

Be Humble, Be Patient, Trust, and Have Discipline
One important lesson I’ve learned on this journey is that winning isn’t just about talent or skill. If you want to earn that champion title, it’s not enough to just practice hard; you need to embrace a mindset of humility, patience, trust, and discipline.

First and foremost, humility is key. No matter how good you think you are, there’s always something new to learn and room for improvement. You have to be open to feedback and willing to grow.

Then, there’s patience. Progress doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time hours of practice, repetition, and sometimes even setbacks. But with patience, every small improvement adds up to something bigger.

Next is trust. You need to trust your teammates, your instructors, and the process. Trust that everyone is working towards the same goal and that your efforts will pay off when you come together as one unit.

And of course, there’s discipline. It’s about showing up, doing the work, and staying committed, even when it feels tough. Discipline in practice, in maintaining a positive attitude, and in sticking to the plan is what gets you through the hard times.

I’m not sure where my drum corps journey will take me next, but I know that these experiences will continue to teach me lessons and give me memories I’ll carry with me for life. To any young people thinking about joining a group like this, don’t be afraid to start, because with every new beginning, a new song is waiting to be played.

So, as I move forward with my drum corps journey, I carry with me the lessons of humility, patience, trust, and discipline, knowing that these values are just as important as the music we create. Only with these qualities can we truly reach our potential and one day, claim the title of champion.
